Resignation etiquette in finance

What to include / leave out for an Investment Analyst

  • Include: A clear last day that respects your contract notice period (check for clawback clauses on bonuses or unvested equity).
  • Document your models: Leave a README or summary file for every active model — assumptions, data sources, update cadence, and where the inputs live.
  • Client and contact notes: If you're client-facing or cover specific names, log key relationships, outstanding requests, and meeting history.
  • Leave out: Where you're going, especially if it's a competitor, a spinout, or launching your own fund. Firms often walk you out the same day if there's a conflict.
  • Skip the critique: Don't use the letter to air grievances about hours, politics, or comp. Save it for the exit interview (or not at all — finance is smaller than it looks).

Should you give 2 weeks notice as an Investment Analyst?

Two weeks is the floor, not the ceiling. Many firms expect four, especially if you're mid-deal, holding proprietary models, or it's bonus season. Even then, follow up with a formal written letter to HR and keep a copy for your records.

If you're remote and your manager works across time zones, email is fine — but copy HR and use a professional tone. Don't resignation-tweet. Don't post on LinkedIn before you've told your boss. And if you're leaving because of calling in sick burnout or a toxic culture, the letter is not the place to explain it — keep it short, thank them for the opportunity, and move on.
